Site Update and New Direction

I have a collection of games finished, that will be discussed shortly.

It has been quite some time since I have posted an article. In the months of the pandemic I have been unable to find the time to write.

Without getting too personal, I am an essential healthcare worker and also taking classes so I have not been able to play many games, especially at the slow deliberate pace required to execute such a detailed review; combing through every inch of the game and taking hundreds of screenshots per playthrough.

As solution to this problem, I am going to shift away from rigid game reviews, and instead write detailed discussions about the games in a more free-form style. This will likely be article collections about specific aspects of a game, rather than one large article.

This frees me up in a number of ways:

  1. I can enjoy the writing process much more
  2. I can have the time to finally write about the 5 games I have 100% completed in the past two years, have completed screenshots, but have been unable to find the motivation to write a strict review
  3. Removing the burden of numerous screenshots will hasten my completion of games
  4. It also allows me to review games I have completed dozens of times in the past without having to start from scratch…. I want to focus on playing retro games I have yet to complete

I hope this message finds all my readers well and hope you enjoy the holidays safely.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 NEW Translation Patch Released

I am thrilled to announce the Project Exile has released a brand new English translation patch for Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. Thracia 776 has long been playable, but has been far from a complete experience, with wonky menus, strange dialogue, and incomprehensible text.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Project Exile team, Thracia 776 is finally playable in a complete format, with fully translated menus, dialogue, and most importantly epilogues, which were a mess in previous translations.

I urge anyone interested to download it immediately, as I will be. Finally I can replay one of my favorite games of all time in a complete English form. I already did a review, but I will do something to commemorate my inevitable playthrough.

Retro Revamped #3: Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

Introduction

Growing up I was always a huge fan of the Castlevania series. It all started for me when I played the first 3 games on my friend’s NES, sometime during the transition between the 16- and 32-bit eras. We spent an entire day getting our young asses whupped by each game, as we illogically jumped from one game to another, losing our progress, but having a hell of a time.

One may ask, Why the hell did it take me so long to play Castlevania? Well I didn’t have an NES growing up, instead relying solely on my Uncle for access to Nintendo’s dominant patriarch console, and unfortunately never got Super Castlevania IV for my SNES. Despite these major oversights, all was forgiven following that fateful day at my friend’s house; I was addicted to the series, now considering it one of my favorite of all time.

Unfortunately, the series in its 2D form has been essentially a no-show since the DS era, and has, of late, been ignored by Konami, who instead prefer to focus on Pachinko machines.

Luckily, the DS games were incredible Symphony of the Night-esque experiences, and kept me busy for quite some time. It is for that reason that I was thrilled when I heard that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night’s, an ambitious SoTN clone, KickStarter campaign was as success. Though this “MetroidVania” style game is critically adored and widely accepted as the better style of Castlevania, I have always preferred the classic, balls-hard, linear approach to the series.

The last time I was able to experience such a Castlevania was during the PSP’s run, with Dracula X Chronicles, which included a 2.5-D remake of Rondo of Blood, the original Turbografx CD Rondo of Blood, and Symphony of the Night; clearly one of the most epic anthologies in gaming history. Since that experience, I had been starving for more of the classic style of Castlevania, but was left un-satiated. That is, until I discovered that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night had a certain stretch goal that was successfully reached. The reward for reaching one of the game’s financing goals, was an entire classic-style Castlevania game entitled: Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. Needless to say I was twice as excited as I was for even the original Bloodstained announcement, despite the game merely being a means to whet the communities appetite during the primary game’s development.

Update and My Current 3DS Addiction

I have been particularly busy with my regular job lately, which has slowed my release schedule significantly. It has not however, slowed my research and consumption of games… priorities man. To update the community, I would like to say that in the past weeks, I have completed three games and am currently working on a fourth that are relevant to the subject matter of this site; retro and retro-inspired games. Some updates:

PSA: Battle for Net Neutrality

To keep it simple and brief, ISPs are pushing Congress to abolish net neutrality. This would allow ISPs the control internet speeds, displayed content and much more. The internet as we know it will cease to exist, replaced with a corporate-controlled shell of its former self. These companies would have the ability to charge extra for full speed access to certain sites, like social media, much like HBO packages on cable. These companies are already like Shinra, from FF7, don’t give them anymore power.

Fight for the Internet below, the vote is in 2 days:
